We don’t need no education
We don’t need no thought control
No dark sarcasm in the classroom
Teachers leave them kids alone
Hey! Teachers! Leave them kids alone
–Roger Waters (Pink Floyd) from “Another Brick in the Wall”
It’s that time again – back to school. Back to packing lunches, back to waiting for the bus, back to buying school supplies, back to hearing complaints about homework . . . and back to standalone back-to-school-leave laws. At least eight states and the District of Columbia have state laws governing leave for attending school events. Parents get protected time off to leave work for student events, school emergencies, teacher meetings, and so on. California, Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, North Carolina, Rhode Island, and Vermont all have standalone laws. In New Jersey, school activities would fall under their “sick” leave law. Maine’s law is a variant to New Jersey’s law, in that 40 hours a year must be allowed for reasons that include school activities. Some of these laws feature paid time off, some unpaid, some accrued time only, and still others require no accrual at all.
Your time off manager needs to know all these laws. Pipkins can do your homework for you. Our “Absence Manager” tool can preset all your state needs into it’s system to make managing back-to-school leave much easier. PTO time, FMLA leave, vacations – we can take care of it. Accrued or no accrual – we can preset your system so you do not need to worry about such things. One state or multiple, we can implement any company with as many federal, state, and local leave acts as you have to work around.
We can’t do anything about the educational system. We can’t prevent thought control or bullying. We can’t do anything about your child’s attitude toward school. We leave that to you. What we can do is make your workday a bit easier handling all types of time off. Leave it to us. Do your homework – give us a call to set up your requirements.
